GPS tracking is not limited to cars, boats or airplanes. With the convenience and affordability of GPS trackers, people are now able to track pets and assets to make sure they don't get lost.

Theft is never a new concept, so what better way to protect your assets with a GPS tracking device? This type is most commonly seen with store shopping carts, but it's not limited to that as GPS trackers can be used on almost anything from small jewelry boxes to large TVs.

The type of GPS tracking we are most familiar with is cellular-based GPS vehicle trackers. Using the mapping application on your phone to get directions and find a specific location is exactly that, and is by far the most common type of GPS tracking. This method of tracking is much faster than satellite GPS because it uses nearby cell towers to send and receive signals rather than ground stations with receivers.

However, there is a small loophole when it comes to the differences between satellite-based GPS vehicle trackers and the previously mentioned cellular-based GPS vehicle trackers; businesses and homes in rural areas that lack cell phone towers may use the satellite method instead of cell phones because the lack of towers means no connectivity availability. Satellite-based vehicle GPS trackers are an excellent fallback for truckers who drive to various destinations but have limited or no cell phone access.

Finally, there is cellular-based tracking. A good example of this is when I worked for a package delivery company that didn't have company vehicles. In order to keep track of the many drivers on their routes, stay up to date on delivery times and locations, and be able to accurately send help when needed, drivers were given a company phone with a tracking app installed during their shifts. This helps startups keep up with workflow without spending thousands of dollars on GPS systems that can't be installed in rental vehicles.

What types of vehicles use GPS?

As technology advances, I don't think there is any vehicle that can't be tracked using GPS. It was originally invented for military use on airplanes, ground vehicles, ships and submarines. GPS is now hardwired into civilian vehicles, but can also be tracked using standalone devices and cell-based trackers. Semi-trucks, vans, public transportation buses, school buses, and even trains are no exception to using and benefiting from this amazing system.
